GABA Supplements – What Everybody Ought to Know

Have you considered buying GABA supplements? Do you know the actual effects… and side-effects? Keep reading and save yourself hours upon hours of maddening investigation on this contradictory topic that will make you EVEN more confused. After reading this post, you’ll uncover the exact pros and cons of the pure GABA supplement. By doing this, you’ll be able to make an educated decision whether or not to use it.

What precisely is GABA?

Now, probably you’re thinking that I’ll bury you under a pile of scientific facts. No, not at all… But I will give you the absolute basics of what GABA is.

GABA is short for γ-Aminobutyric acid and it’s an amino acid which behaves as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. (What are neurotransmitters? They are the chemical ‘messengers’ through which nerve impulses move from one neuron to the next)

GABA suppresses nerve transmission in the brain. All this means that it calms the nervous activity. To put it differently, it’s utilized by the brain to cause tranquility and relaxation.

It’s good to know that glutamate and Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) are the most abundant neurotransmitters within the central nervous system, and particularly in the cerebral cortex, which is where the process of thinking takes place and where sensations are interpreted.

The benefits of GABA supplements

It’s frequently advertised that pure GABA products produce the effects of natural tranquilizers. Furthermore, it’s promoted that they can boost the Human Growth Hormone (HGH) levels. That’s the main reason why they’re used by many bodybuilders and fitness enthusiast.

Here are the main expected positive effects from pure GABA supplement:

  • Feeling of relaxation and calmness
  • Deep and restful sleep when taken before bed
  • Higher release of HGH
  • Lean Muscle growth

Are there any known GABA Side effects?

GABA’s suggested serving size is 500 mg – 1000 mg per day. Yet, most bodybuilders take much higher dosages in their desire to increase the HGH. Widespread advice among bodybuilders is to start with 500 mg and gradually build up the dosage.

GABA Supplements Dosage

It’s proven that in higher doses, GABA might actually increase the symptoms of anxiety and cause sleeping disorders. It may also lead to numbness in the area of the mouth,  temporary itchy feeling over the skin, slight nausea, and a suffocating feeling that could last for several minutes.

Note: Those with liver or kidney disease should not take this or any other amino acid supplement without first consulting a physician.

The actual results people get when using GABA supplements

Pure GABA is used for 2 main reasons:

  1. to deal with different forms of anxiety
  2. because of the expected effect of better sleep and enhanced HGH

Based on my own research, the opinions and experiences of people who tried it vary A LOT.

While there are individuals who state that GABA helped them overcome depression and anxiety, others say it has little or no effect on their symptoms.

While some bodybuilders say it definitely provides better sleep, some get the opposite effect: they wake up during the night, or they can’t fall asleep for hours. Opinions are heavily mixed.

It is certain though that the effects on HGH secretion cannot be measured by the individual’s experiences, because people cannot be aware of this.

To understand the actual effects of GABA supplements, we have to turn to the scientific researches made on the topic and user experiences.

I had been using GABA from kirkman. I take 500 mg at bedtime, it helps me fall asleep but it doesn’t help me stay sleep.
By the way I have chronic insomnia.
No to long ago a try picamilon by liftmode, 500mg as well, it doesn’t work for me as good as the kirkman gaba does, most nights it doesn’t even help me fall asleep.

I’m using GABA 500. Is it possible that this supplement can cause itchy all over my skin and why? I also feel hot flushes, it that a common side effect? Should this side effects wear off and should I continue to use GABA.

Have used GABA for some time now. I actually find 3g half an hour before bed is ideal. Any more and I do temporary shortness of breath 20 mins after ingestion. This can be quite distressing if I’m already in bed, and I have to get up and walk around. Under 2.5g and I feel the benefits on my sleep quality (time to fall asleep, depth of sleep and level of ‘freshness’ on waking up) are negligible. After about 3 months I stop using for a month. My sleep is not as good, but after 3-4 weeks I then start again on a 2-3 month cycle.

So for me (85kgs fit male, 40yo) I find 2.5-3.0g before bedtime ideal.

Based on my research I understand GABA has synergistic effects with the amino acids arginine, ornithine and lysine. So I plan on taking a special mix of these amino acids (I have researched the right ratios) with GABA in the near future just before bedtime as I have been doing.

i use it to sleep. have radical chronic insomnia. the dosage is l/4 tsp (715 mg) of the powder.
it’s part of a sleep cocktail that includes benadryl, “deep sleep” which i buy at whole foods & which contains poppy, valerian ,passionflower, chamomile, lemon balm, oat seed & orange peel & 10 mg. of time-release melatonin.
the gaba is powerful & combines well with these other things.
