Is GABA Safe to Use as a Dietary Supplement?

I have been suffering from anxiety for a long time. It is not severe, but I hate when I feel as if I am about to be suffocated and most of all I hate the headaches. At first, I did not wish to take medicines but, my family started to insist that I should take medical help for it. So, I went to a doctor and he prescribed me GABA supplements. But, before taking those supplements, I did some research in internet to know more about it. The main question that revolved my mind was is GABA safe?

Should I worry about some weird side effects after taking it? Since, many people are suffering from anxieties, I decided to write about my findings and experience so, that people like me might get some idea about GABA supplements. So, what is GABA? GABA is Gamma aminobutyric acid. In simple words, it is a neurotransmitter which is used to relieve people from stress and anxiety. It helps to calm our nerves and give us relaxation and stress relief moments.

Many people have pointed out different benefits of GABA. Some of the benefits that i had come across was:

  • Lean muscle growth
  • Ability to sleep properly
  • Feeling calm and relaxed
  • Mood improvement
  • Relief from pain
  • Increase in HGH (Human Growth Hormone) and
  • Relief from anxiety

I learned that the anxiety that I was suffering from, could be dealt by it. Besides that it seemed that it could also help to deal with stress, depression, pain, insomnia, panic attacks, nervousness and hypertension.

Is Gaba Safe

Even though, a doctor had prescribed me the GABA supplements for my anxiety, I was still wondering if it would actually work. So, I did a little more research and I found that low GABA levels are seen in people who are suffering from depression and anxiety. I also learned that a research had been conducted to see if GABA really reduces anxiety or not. The result was that the GABA supplements did have a calming effect in anxiety.

The main question: Is GABA safe?

All these information brought me back to one question, which was is GABA safe? By reading about GABA in general, it seemed like it could help me to deal with my anxieties. But, it did leave a question whether it would give me some side-effects? Since it is a supplement, I did expect some side-effects but, I wanted to know, to what extent would these side effects occur. I did found out some side effects but, at this point I would also like to talk about what side effects did I experience after taking it.

Initial Side-effects Explained

The supplements are comparatively safe. But, it did cause some small side-effects. The first time I took it, I felt increase in my heart rate and the next day I could not even keep my eyes opened for a moment because I was feeling so sleepy. But, that did not last long and everything went back to normal. With these the side-effects of GABA came to an end. So, I was pretty much happy because the side-effects did not last long.

Use the recommended GABA dosage and you’ll be safe

My doctor and many people did warn me from taking higher dose of GABA. They said if I take GABA more than the prescribed dose, I might face a lot of side effects. Its higher dose could increase anxiety rather than curing it. Other side effects that are brought by higher dose of GABA are numbness in mouth, increase in blood pressure, vomiting, nausea, itchy sensation in skin and suffocation. There are other side effects as well. So, what I would suggest others is that if you are planning to take a product, then make sure that you take it in prescribed and right amount. Please do not take it in higher amount. Also get the best GABA supplement available as you don’t want to risk having bad results or any negative effects due to low quality brands.

Conclusion

While researching about the topic, it seemed that many people had different reactions to GABA supplements. Some said it helped them to deal with their anxiety and depression whereas some said it did not affect them at all. But, through my personal experience, I can say that it can help to overcome anxiety. When it comes to its side effect, I did not find any serious side effects. I mean I could deal with a few days of sleepiness. After all, few days of sleepiness couldn’t kill me. All in all, GABA supplements are safe.
